dark knight rises – but not above the joker !

24 Jul

in any creative person’s life, one swansong will come which just happens magically, and however successful or legendary his or her other creations may be, that one ‘special’ flagship creation will always destined to remain unbeaten. even by his/her own-self. as art is not laboratory science. that particular creation is blessed or destined to be having midas touch, and its not just from a creator, but something invisible – an extra X factor is added into it, which even creator cant repeat. it doesn’t mean thier other outcomes are of inferior quality or less memorable. but that one life changing creation will became his/ her shadow or stamp for the life. for chetan bhagat , its ‘five point someone’, for sachin its innings against australia, for for for mirza ghalib its ‘hazaro khwahishe aisi’, for ARR its ‘taal’, for ramesh sippy its ‘sholay’, for salim-javed its ‘deewar’, for james camaroon, its ‘titenic’ ( however, he came extremely close to it, that too back to back in ‘avatar’ – a rare triumph like our suraj barjatya’s MPK & HAKK), for alfred hitchkok its ‘psycho’, for micheal jackson its ‘thriller’- the list is endless. thats why i doubt if J.K. rawling can ever touch harry potter again. only some chosen one next to god type creators like Steven Spielberg can break this ‘law of nature’.

for Christopher Nolan, its ‘Dark Knight’ (2008).

and, Nolan – a genius filmmaker to whom i bow down always, is no Spielberg.

i had already sensed that ‘hand of god’ in dark knight, and expected that barring once in a lifetime miracle, its extremely tough to repeat the height of intoxication to ‘dark knight’ again in same premises / backdrop and that’s also too soon.  its hard. really really hard.

and sadly, i felt so after watching ‘dark knight rises’ at home of Nolan, in Hollywood, that too in IMAX. that too in one of the best IMAX of USA of universal. as prescribed by Nolan himself.

and like most of the trilogies fails to maintain impact in third act (with record breaking box office success and acclaim though) – be it LOTR, MATRIX, SPIDER MAN, POTC, ALIENS, JURASSIC PARK, TERMINATOR (again there are exceptions like ‘star wars’) – this BATMAN TRIOLOGY got hit from its own legendary second part ‘DARK KNIGHT’.

the film is not bad. its watchable. in fact two time watch. Nolan has composed breathtaking action scenes and some well written dialogues and dramtaic scenes. and i have no problem with the talkative side of it – as far as conversation is engaging and novel to me. with grand background score, sincere performances by cast and an noir undercurrent of heavy philosophical angle established since long in the series – its fine film. but just not that great. perhaps my expectation rises too much. perhaps film rises much then needed.

and not so class!

its impossible to beat the ‘joker’ and even Nolan couldn’t outdo it. (comparison are inevitable as we are talking about installment of same universe). villains here are so predictably uni-dimensional that any 007 villain can laughing out loud in graveyard. with same plotline of terrorism, i had seen many better thrilling products of Hollywood itself. john travolta to tom cruise, matt damon to robert downey jr we have seen them all. too much stress on portraying batman as tragic hero makes the whole point unrealistic to me. as ultimately it must be batman movie, not ‘pyasaa’ without a shawl, with a mask !

the climax is surprisingly having too much similarities with hold your breath (and close your eyes if you don’t want spoilers) , ‘Agent Vinod’ !! WTF :-P. and the so called ‘twists’ are domain area for abbas-mustan. infact, a set up for major plot point somehow instantly reminded me ‘soldier’ of bobby deol ! actually, this film holds many unintentional similarities with our Bollywood movies. we have seen it all in sunny deol or sanjay datt or ajay devgan or naseeruddin shah or akshay kumar or khan films. here it is narrated in serious way with dash of heaviness.  and those prison in well, is more absurd rather than absorbing and i would have send a copy of duma’s ‘count of monte christo’ tto warner bro.s for future reference. 🙂

and, the core message / ‘gyan’ that Nolan wanted to give us is though compelling and makes sense – its nothing but repetitive extension of its worthy predecessor ‘Dark Knight’ . same notes, same brush strokes, its like attending same lecture twice. and that dilutes its impact to me. what through joker is perfectly narrated, this time boringly narrated as there is nothing unusual and i can sense / predict most of the scenes in advance, including dialogues !  besides that some set pieces and events way too familiar with past Nolan movies – like real identity of a crucial character is hidden, black suites and yellow lighting during some important action (Don 2 or the avengers offered better surprises ! and daredevil has better dark culmination ).

so, the film has length (2hr45 min.) and width(IMAX though jarringly intermittent) but lacks depth. i mean, it has depth, but not of Nolan’s prestige or inception or dark knight. one may ask ‘why so serious?’ 😉

still, its very good watch, though catwoman has half backed characterization, this time all ladies on screen are sizzling unlike ‘dark knight’ and alfred the micheal always rocks.

its what i felt. you would have felt otherwise. i will surely miss best batman of all Christian Bale, those fantastic batman / gotham universe created by Nolan, already missing joker the ledger and that missed target in final chapter which could have rise much above then we are being offered and already accepted happily.

i repeat, still its a must watch film by many standard, may be flawless, may get critical appreciation this time too. and i shall watch it again for its many lyrical qualities that i have not discussed here. but not that all time favorite memorable classic. eventually you may realize that. i wish Nolan make at least one another batman movie instead of suggested robin at the end with fresh outlook. i wish film’s vision would have been as exciting as its visuals.

what rises up , up and up…will fall ultimately with its own burden. that’s how all legend ends.

superheroes and super-makers are no exception of this laws of gravity.

I do not insist to forget previous chapters. My way of looking to this is to expect least and enjoy the movie. It’s difficult to follow and match higher standards/benchmark every now and then.

Why do we always end up in comparing it to previous ones or similar stories?

Dear Tapan, I watch movies to learn, un-lean & explore various aspects which can help us tackle real life situation (and forget problems for couple of hours). And if doesn’t work/you don’t like, that’s fine. You don’t have right to criticize things which you’re not capable to even think of (forget making). They have done their hard-work and learn to appreciate those efforts.

If we appreciate the people for their good work and put them on the pedestal for it, we have right to criticize them. I think even Nolan and JV wouldn’t have problem with that. But let me clear that I like TDKR compared to AVENGERS.

the Problem in TDR is Villain… any super hero Movie should have strong characterization of a Villain (like Joker or Ra’s al Ghul in Earlier parts..)… which is missing in TDR…this is the main reason the movie doesn’t hit a chord as earlier one…also as Indicated by Jay unfinished characterization of Cat women also makes an dent…

(reminding you, your genius article over the villain Heath Ledger, and his acting nd all the f**king dialogues)… if it is a the law then, let it falling down….. the best way to see that, they tries to rise….. and after all this, you are still my best columnist, best writer Gujarat has ever produce, best critics and the perfect humanbeing….. rocko Mr. Jay Vasavada………..

Alfred won the Heart this time.. The Conversation betn Wayne n him was so Touching.. One of the BEST EMOTIONAL SCENE I have EVER Watched in Hollywood movies..
    Cotillard ❤ was Surprise package..
    Freeman, Oldman Both were Superb..
    Anne.. Ohhhh.. Best Catwoman Ever..
the scene I like the most was when Wayne remembered the Fear why he bacame Batman n Jumps Successfully without rope.. Jus Osummm..
Of course None can even Touch "The Dark Knight" n Especially 'Joker'.. that movie was Out standing.. even Ramesh sippy cant make another Sholay..
bt I think ARR can make Pukar, Guru, Rang De Basanti, Jodha Akbar.. Taal was Taal bt though his work is never-the-less.. 😉

Well said tht there is laws of gravity …
When miranda comes on screen at tht time I feel tht she will make trouble in end of movie , means its a mistake by nolan tht normal people cn guess actual story line,,,,, suspense is week and not tht nuclear bomb thing is very repetitive….
Although I njoy lot thn avengers …bcoz its previous impect of nolan, bale , and joker….

Sorry for being skeptical but somehow WB and DC must have pursued people to end the trilogy. Nolan didn’t want to return for the third. Bale’s condition to portray batman is not fulfilled by including Robin. Now even without nolan, we can expect a re-boot of Batman with Robin or separate nightwing series (according to comics) and bruce wayne can return anytime to guide robin..thus at the end studios have every doors open to cash the popularity of the dark knight trilogy. The movie is the worst from nolan but still better than the others, It’s not perfect ending but ended better than Raimi’s trilogy.

its really pity to see so many comments against the thoughts of jaybhai. he has shared his views, if you dont agree, dont be. it is such a open secret that if u really liked/ loved any thing, u do compare it with similar brand. and its open secret again ke, best thing always remains ONE. for me its PRESTIGE, for JV its DARK KNIGHT (i guess) for others it could be ………..
just chill and enjoy other IMDB top 250 movies..
and jay bhi, why the format of your blog is a bit clumsy. its not “that much” user friendly. again its a personal feeling. nothing personal. lol.

Agree with the thought that its really good but not as good as THE DARK KNIGHT. As mentioned TDK movie has its own Aura. Heath Ledger #RESPECT.

But, each movie has its own experiences and the universe. By this movie, I learned the meaning of “RISE”. Deshi… Deshi… Basara… Basara…

    hello sir,
I read ur thoughts nd at some point i agree,at some i rily disagree!
Firstly wil share The dark knight rises,it was up 2 d mark as u said nd watchable nd a lot enjoyble bt ya d problem is dat u cnt beat ur great creatn bt dat doesnt mean u cnt make any odr ! For me Inceptn nd dark knight both were remarkble cinema dat Gr8 nolan given to our generatn, i thnk 4 me evry directr has 1 point of view nd evry fan has 1 expectn if it satisfied you its done we dnt want evry cinema gve us gr8 movies! I wasnt expectng dis tym dat tdkr wil cme wid twist nd turns i was expectng dat hw it wil engage ur emotnly,it engages bt nt lyk tdk ! Bt its sad dat wheter don 2 nd agent vinod gve us surprises bt it faild in almst evry expect ..its ok to deal wid when u knw dis is gng 2 happn bt u enjoy d seq hw it happns! Nolan works big tym then any odr directr or say grand directr u knw y coz he has ability 2 connect his audnce wid his movie,it makes sense ..feel rily sad hw our audnce is cheatd by our countrys director in d name of mindless entartnr or they said its masala movie! Why? Whetr its ready, bodygaurd, singham any of them its jst example…evrytme i feel rily critics r smetme absolulty correct,!
Nolan has creatd best triology of batman or say he made d best series of superhero, . Christopher Nolan has created a dark, genuinely frightening, grand finale to his Batman trilogy. In his hands, the comic book material becomes something else – a thing of horror and beauty and epic scale!
The dark knight rises rily rise u know why its beacuse it all ends bt with a gr8 dark knight,gr8 chrtn balle, michele, genius hans zimmer ,unforgetble Joker ‘heath’ nd who all creatd dis ‘memento’epic journy nd 4 me biggr then any other Directr ‘Christopher Nolan’ …u gve us satisfyng conclusn! Last bt nt least a letter by chris nolan aftr cmplte its triology

For me, this movie is about “Batman” and not about any “villain”. For it to rise above “The Dark Night”, “joker” must rise again with “Ledger (not possible anymore)” or “Kevin Spacey (Seven fame)”.

So here, the batman rose above the dark night!

અને તમે એનો અર્થ કાઢ્યો ‘ane Guajarati bhasha na writer hova no matlab nathi k English na avadavu… shun duniya ma loko ne 2 language nathi avadati hoti…’
      colloquial english નો જવાબ ઉપર મેં આપી જ દીધો છે. હવે એનોય કોઈક ભળતો અર્થ ના કાઢતા!

    yes…true… felt the same way….
obviously ‘The Rises’ has rised most of the energetic hormones available in my body
freshed up my mind with satisfaction of watching such tight film after a long time.

but, didn’t even touched those strings of my heart where previous version literally played Simphony….!!

i remember once u have stated in the review of film ‘Guzarish’, that a creator falls in love with his own creature at times.
and tries to recreat it again and again.(May not be the exact case with Mr. Nolan…!)

But, the X factor is ‘Magic’, It happens somehow, someway…anyway….but not in some
Particular way or predefined way….It just happens…Magic can’t be Created..

People who are just blindly agreeing to what “JV” has written don’t seem to have an opinion of their own. They just seem to want to please him. Thats pathetic! Why do a post mortem of the movie? Enjoy it. See it this way, no one likes comparison, you yourself wouldn’t like if you keep getting compared to your sibling even if he or she is from the same parent. I don’t see the point of even telling all this to all so called expert movie critics here but I guess maybe you should go and create something worthwhile on your own in your life before bashing up someones effort.

Just like Spielberg, for Nolan also, it is difficult to decide among The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception, Memento and many more coming in future, as his masterpiece. To me comparison between Spielberg and Nolan is same as Sachin and Bradman. I would go for Nolan instead of Spielberg.

The Dark Knight is my all time favorite movie(I read your review on Joker and TDK I simply loved it, though your best one is still Aks)

You know what I have seen TDK over and over again just for Joker its so intense and witty. As u said in your review he was not dangerous he terrifying.
Since I saw TDK first time I was waiting for next one.. to see wo could triumph this.. following all blogs and Nolan in every media..

Now when TDKR released, I went for movie on first day itself but biggest disappointment. I think Halle Berry was a much better catwomen then her, Alfred seems like a Ramdev baba, Gordon is another cop, and villain oh i dont want 2say anything its so pathetic I guess Shakti Kapoor would have done better. the only constant which holds this free fall is Christian Bale as good as Machinist, Prestige, BB or TDK. the only reason why u should not leave theater before climax starts.

The point of failure here is story it seems like they were into so much hurry to end this series that everything falls apart.

I always used to like DC movies over Marvell specially Batman series (New one of course)because they are very intense. Marvel movie a re kinda childish leave your brain sorta.. specially Spiderman i can’t imagine a movie where everyone is calling their near and dear by their full name most of the time.(Mary Jane, Peter Parker, Uncle Rob oh really.. now tell me the address as well). Batman series was with dept for tinkers.. but all gone now..

Below is an excerpt from Metro London on Marvel vs DC..

In light, cheery contrast, Avengers Assemble’s candy-coloured world offers japes, wisecracks and comedy banter. And with four superheroes in the shape of Thor, Captain America, Hulk and Iron Man – not to mention A-list plus-ones – busy pulling together to save the planet, there’s scant time for angsty, individual navel-gazing. Audiences gobbled it up.
But to reduce their vision to dark versus light or, indeed, 2D versus 3D (Nolan preferring to work in IMAX rather than 3D to deliver that extra wow factor), is to dumb down the power of both directors. The triumph of Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon is ultimately one of wit and synthesis. He allows each hero enough breathing space so that, instead of becoming a huge CGI-effects mess, his movie feels miraculously character-led. Despite its bulging attractions, Avengers Assemble is still a terrific studio product, masterminded to create one giant franchise out of four mega-franchises, plus generate spin-off sequels to be directed by assorted hands for hire.
Nolan, on the other hand, is, like Tim Burton, as close as you get to a studio auteur. Delivering daring action thrills to a mass audience while demanding they bring their brains has raised the bar for a genre that critics have often dismissed as cartoonish or childish.

    Dear JV,
Just read your article on DKR
I think Christopher Nolan Director of Batman Series has done it again,
Action, Thrills, Suspense, Emotion and Super Hero as Batman all kept in a balanced manner and Fantastic work by each character made the Epic movie a memorable one in the Batman Series, Nolan is not a full that he ends this with Batman’s Death, We know super hero never dies and it applies here to a different super hero movie which is far better than other Super hero movies, Maja Aavi Bhai mane to , Ha ek khami hati, joker ni “Why So Serious?” @the Dark Night Rueses Juo ne mast raho @ Galaxy Cinema, rajkot First Day Second Show!!!!! 20.07.2012

i was disappointed…there are lot better masterpiece in Hollywood then this one but u just cant compare 2001 or say pacino flicks with dark knight…..nolan did want to push movie as high as he can..but i think something like Mission impossible 4 …tom cruise hired best stuntmen , writers , actors …but it lacked something …something that previous movies in series had…the main point i would like to point is this” TDKR has so many bits which seems like typical bollywood type or say didnt match the previous standards if nolan…like truck is stopped and Taliya dies while speaking last words of wisdom …death of Bane was very disappointing …the enemy superior to Bruce in physical and motivational way just dies in a blink with shot…it doesnt fit ….enter miranda…hey i m actually Taliya ..this is bane…let me go with bomb…and leave bane…catwoman comes…shoots Bane..doesnt fit standard of nolan..it could have been full with glory..besides these movie had some very intense moment which makes it very enjoyable ..once again if u are teenager and havent seen any of stanely kubrick , clint , pacino, kurosawa ,qentin tarentino , fincher, speilberg, nero , guy richie , korean epics ,martin scorsese , jack nicolson , hitchcokian epics …then u will find this very great movie..which i heared lots of people stating that this is best movie ever in their life…..
